Surprise and joy in Rome this afternoon, but it’s a day of disappointment for hockey. Just a few hours ago it was still possible to imagine a universal Catholic church headed by a man whose soft hands, scoring prowess and youthful lower-body injury have been so much in the (Canadian) news these last few days. Now, with Pope Francis preparing to take the helm at the Holy See, that’s all in the past. The Vatican has been quiet, so far, on whether the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has ever been on skates before let alone scored a clutch goal, but stand by. It’s not as if it’s a question on which they’re going be able to keep their silence indefinitely, is it?
